ZIMURA rains on Chibadura family parade

Pretty Manyewe

The family of late musician John Chibadura may not be smiling to the bank as earlier anticipated after the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association found that there is no resemblance between a song used in promoting the World Cup and yesteryear hit Mudiwa Janet.

Over the past few years, the internet has been in a frenzy after fans heard resemblance in one of the world cup songs constantly being played on Supersport.

The Chibadura family, through Isabel Nyamukoko approached ZIMURA, asking the institution to look into a possible copyright breach.

Following the request, ZIMURA formed a panel, which compared the two songs under question.
In a statement, ZIMURA said the panel comprised of Charles Charamba, Mono Mukundu and one Ras Dread found very little evidence of similarity.

“A thorough research and analysis of the songs under comparison were done. The analysis included code sequence, code progression, melodies, and arrangements. The research included inputs from music experts namely Pastor Charles Charamba, Clive Mono Mukundu, and Dr. Dread who is a Capetown-based renowned music producer with lots of experience covering different genres and sounds. Pastor Charamba and Mukundu have also been members of the ZIMURA’s Authentication panel before,” wrote ZIMURA.
After the process it was found that the FIFA World Cup song did not originate from the Chibadura song.

“The research and analysis of both songs have clearly shown that the 2022 FIFA World Cup song did not originate from the late Chibadura’s song “Mudiwa Janet” but rather from a song titled “Hayya Hayya (Better Together)” that was performed by a number of international artists,” said ZIMURA.

The findings and conclusions were relayed to the Chibadura family who fully understood and accepted the outcome
ZIMURA urged members to contact them before going to the press with claims of infringement.
