The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported a disturbing increase in road fatalities, with 77 lives lost in over 1,000 traffic accidents during the 12-day period from December 15 to December 26.
While giving the statistics, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi highlighted an alarming rise in fatalities despite a decrease in the total number of accidents compared to the same period last year.
“We recorded 1,211 road traffic accidents, 65 fatal accidents, with 77 people being killed. 401 people were injured,” he stated.
Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe Managing Director, Mr. Munesu Munodawafa urged motorists to prioritize safety to prevent further loss of life.
“Drivers should avoid speeding and overtaking in circumstances that are clearly not safe to do so. Above all, motorists are implored not to overload vehicles when travelling on the country’s roads,” he emphasized.
In response to the growing fatalities, the ZRP has intensified traffic patrols and enforcement measures across major highways and urban areas.
