In a statement released earlier this Wednesday, the Chairman of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, affirmed the legitimacy of the recent election results in the Republic of Mozambique.
The statement noted that the Constitutional Council of Mozambique ruled to uphold the victory of the FRELIMO Party in the October 9th, 2024 general elections. President Mnangagwa, who also serves as the President of Zimbabwe, stated that this ruling “completes and thus exhausts all lawful processes on determining election results, in line with that country’s national laws, and in keeping with SADC’s Election Guidelines and expectations.”
President Mnangagwa called on all parties involved in the electoral process to “abide by the decision of the Council which should provide a constitutional way forward for the country, and facilitate the way to greater peace, normalcy and stability in the interest of all Mozambicans.” He assured that SADC stands ready to assist the incoming government and people of Mozambique in consolidating their electoral democracy.
The SADC Chairman also urged the international community to “respect the sovereign will of the people and the Republic of Mozambique” and to constructively support the processes towards peace, law and order in the country.
President Mnangagwa noted that the recent spate of national elections across the SADC region is “a loud testimony that democracy continues to find deeper roots and to flourish in our SADC Region.” This latest affirmation of the Mozambique election results is seen as an important step in ensuring stability and democratic continuity in Southern Africa.
