As Zimbabwe prepares to host the 44th SADC Heads of State and Government Summit from August 17-18, the Zimbabwe Republic Police have assured the public that they are deploying adequate police resources to maintain peace and security across the country.

In a press statement, Commissioner-General Thandabantu Godwin Matanga detailed the police’s plans to ensure the safety of both SADC dignitaries and Zimbabwean citizens during this important event.

The statement noted that the upcoming SADC summit will be preceded by Zimbabwe’s annual commemoration of the country’s Heroes and Defence Forces holidays. To cover these high-profile events, the Zimbabwe Republic Police will be deployed across Harare and other parts of the nation.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has deployed adequate police officers and resources to ensure that peace prevails not only in Harare but in all parts of the country,” Matanga said. He urged Zimbabweans to uphold the law-abiding citizen philosophy that the country is known for globally.

The police chief also called on the public to cooperate with officers controlling or directing traffic at road junctions, traffic lights, and other points. Motorists were warned that any reckless or drunk driving would be dealt with firmly, with unroadworthy vehicles impounded and stern action taken against those who ignore traffic rules.

Matanga appealed to parents to prioritize the safety and security of children during the holiday period. He also urged the public to continue providing his office with information on drug barons and suppliers, so the law can take its course without fear or favor.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police will also be cracking down on unlicensed liquor outlets and shebeens operating during this period. Licensed liquor outlets were enjoined to adhere to their license terms and conditions, including stipulated opening and closing times.

Finally, Matanga took the opportunity to wish all visitors to Zimbabwe a safe and hospitable stay, encouraging them to enjoy the peace and security that the country is known for.
