Harare – In a concerning development, the Ministry of Health and Child Care reported two confirmed cases of the rare viral infection known as Mpox (Monkeypox), in the country.
Mpox was declared a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security by the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on August 13th, 2024.
At a Press briefing held today in Harare, the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr D. T. Mombeshora indicated that two cases had been identified; one in Harare and another in Mberengwa. Dr Mombeshora said both individuals were currently in isolation at home and receiving appropriate care. The Ministry assured the nation that the cases were stable and the patients were recovering.
Mpox, which was formerly known as “Monkeypox”, is endemic to Central and West Africa. The virus spreads through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials. Symptoms include fever, rash, headache, muscle ache, and swollen lymph nodes.
The Ministry of Health urged the public not to panic and reassured the nation that the situation was under control. They further outlined various preparedness and response activities, including the activation of the National and Subnational Incident Management Systems, training of healthcare workers, and conducting awareness campaigns.
Enhanced surveillance at all ports of entry, including monitoring of travelers, has also been implemented. Additionally, the Ministry stated that it will continue to update the nation through regular press briefings as the situation evolves.
The public is urged to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility and to follow recommended preventive measures, such as avoiding contact with individuals showing symptoms, practicing good personal hygiene, and using personal protective equipment when caring for infected persons.
The Ministry’s proactive approach and the implementation of comprehensive measures aim to contain the Mpox outbreak and ensure the safety and well-being of the Zimbabwean people. The nation stands united in its commitment to overcome this public health challenge.
