His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the current Chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has embarked on an official visit to the SADC Secretariat headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana.
President Mnangagwa, who assumed the SADC chairmanship earlier this year, is meeting with the Secretariat staff and overseeing several key events during his visit.
One of the main agenda items is the formal handover of the newly built SADC Secretariat headquarters building. The new headquarters facility is expected to provide a modern and efficient workspace for the regional bloc’s administrative operations.
In addition, the SADC Chairman will preside over a groundbreaking ceremony to commence construction of the SADC Standby Force Regional Logistics Depot (RLD). The RLD will serve as a central hub for storage and distribution of equipment and supplies to support the SADC Standby Force, the region’s rapid reaction military capability.
“This visit underscores President Mnangagwa’s commitment to strengthening SADC’s institutional capacity and readiness to address regional security challenges,” said a senior SADC official. “The new headquarters and logistics depot will be important assets as we work to promote peace, security and socio-economic development in Southern Africa.”
The SADC Secretariat, based in Gaborone, coordinates the implementation of regional policies and programs on behalf of the 16 Member States. President Mnangagwa’s visit is expected to reinforce the regional body’s efforts to deepen integration and advance its strategic agenda under his leadership.
