In a significant move aimed at revitalizing the country’s sports infrastructure, the Zimbabwean government has approved a set of proposals that will see increased private sector participation in the development, refurbishment, upgrade, repair, and maintenance of sports stadia nationwide.
“This is a game-changing initiative that will breathe new life into our sports facilities and provide world-class sporting experiences for athletes and fans alike,” said Hon. Dr. Jenfan Muswere, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, during a post-Cabinet media briefing.
The proposals, presented by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Eng. Daniel Garwe, outline several key strategies to achieve this goal, including leveraging the Built-Operate and Transfer model, government guarantees to support the utilization of FIFA’s Forward 2.0 Funding Initiative, government-private sector funded projects, and the development of grassroots sporting facilities.
“By partnering with the private sector, we can tap into their expertise, resources, and innovation to transform our sports stadia into modern, well-equipped facilities that can host international competitions and serve as hubs for community engagement,” Dr. Muswere explained.
Priority will be given to the construction of a new stadium in the New City at Mount Hampden, as well as the refurbishment of existing stadia in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, and Bindura. The government also intends to replicate these strategies in other cities and towns across the country.
“This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to developing sports in Zimbabwe,” Dr. Muswere emphasized. “By investing in our sports infrastructure, we are not only creating world-class facilities but also fostering a culture of active, healthy lifestyles and nurturing the next generation of sporting champions.”
The refurbishment of the National Sports Stadium in Harare to Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved standards is already at an advanced stage of completion, further underscoring the government’s dedication to this initiative.
“These proposals are a testament to the government’s vision of transforming Zimbabwe into a regional sports hub, and we are confident that this partnership with the private sector will help us achieve that goal,” Dr. Muswere concluded.
