In a landmark event marking International Disability Day, Zimbabwe’s First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa led a gathering of over 5,000 people at the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex, demonstrating the government’s renewed commitment to disability rights and inclusion.

The December 11 commemoration saw the rollout of a comprehensive disability policy adopted across all 26 government ministries, marking a significant step toward national inclusivity. “No one and no place will be left behind,” declared Dr. Mnangagwa in her keynote address, emphasizing the importance of community support and acceptance for people with disabilities.

The First Lady’s initiative brought immediate practical support to attendees, including food hamper distributions and on-site eye care services. People with albinism received crucial sun protection supplies, donated through a partnership with the Chinese Embassy and the Angel of Hope Foundation.

In a significant development for education access, Ambassador Nhau announced 25 scholarships designated for children with disabilities, reinforcing the event’s focus on creating tangible opportunities for the disabled community.

Hon. Rose Mpofu, Special Advisor on Disability Issues, praised Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa’s efforts as a catalyst for positive change. “This policy represents more than words on paper; it’s a pathway to genuine inclusion,” Mpofu stated.

Mr. Bruce Nyoni from the Albino Trust of Zimbabwe highlighted the policy’s practical impact, noting its potential to transform lives within the disability sector. The initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader vision of creating an equitable society where disability is not a barrier to full participation in national life.

The event marked a decisive step forward in Zimbabwe’s commitment to disability rights, combining policy implementation with practical support and community engagement.
