VP Chiwenga Underscores Commitment to Diamond Sector Growth During Chiyadzwa Plant Visit

Mutare – Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Guveya Dominic Nyikadzino Chiwenga recently toured the Chiyadzwa Diamond Deep Boiling Plant in Mutare District, reaffirming the government’s dedication and commitment to modernizing and strengthening Zimbabwe’s diamond mining sector. The visit highlighted the importance of the Marange diamond fields and the role of advanced processing technologies in maximizing the economic benefits of this valuable resource.

The Chiyadzwa plant, crucial for processing diamonds from the historically significant Marange fields, utilizes cutting-edge technology to enhance recovery rates and ensure environmentally responsible practices. Vice President Chiwenga emphasized the need for continuous modernization to boost productivity and maintain competitiveness in the global diamond market.

During his tour, the Vice President observed the plant’s processing operations and engaged with staff and management to gain firsthand insights into the challenges and innovations within the sector. He acknowledged the dynamic nature of the diamond industry, citing recent price downturns affecting profitability.

β€œThe diamond industry is dynamic and the sector has witnessed unprecedented challenges and opportunities,” he stated. “It is some of these challenges that we continue to address in order to be more viable and seize opportunities abound in the diamond trading industry. Rough diamond prices have been on a downturn and this is affecting profitability in the sector.”

With Africa contributing over 60% of global rough diamond production, and Zimbabwe ranking as the 7th largest producer by volume, Vice President Chiwenga stressed the importance of producing high-quality diamonds. He urged the plant’s management to prioritize sustainable mining practices that minimize environmental impact while maximizing output, aligning with international standards and benefiting local communities.

The Vice President also advocated for community engagement and initiatives that create employment opportunities and improve living standards for those residing near the diamond fields. He highlighted the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility programs, including the Sustainable Community Enterprises and Development program, which allocates $60,000 USD monthly for local development projects. The company’s contributions to local infrastructure, such as the construction and renovation of school buildings, were also acknowledged. The Vice President’s visit signals a strong governmental commitment to responsible and sustainable diamond mining practices that contribute to both national economic growth and the well-being of local communities.
