A dark cloud hovers above the nation today as yet another military Commander has died.
Lieutenant General Edzai Absolom Chanyuka Chimonyo, Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army has died following a long battle with cancer.
As the news of his demise filtered through this morning, one could not resist a sense of shock as Zimbabwe’s heroic Commanders of the liberation struggle, and independent Zimbabwe defence luminaries continue depart.
Announcing the passing in of the veteran freedom fighter, Presidential Spokesperson, Mr George Charamba, through his Twitter handle, @Jamwanda2, could not conceal the devastation felt across the nation at such a loss.
“Devastated to announce the passing on of General Chimonyo early this morning after a long fight against Cancer. Go well freedom fighter, Commander and Ambassador,” announced Mr Charamba.
General Chimonyo was appointed Commander of the ZNA on December 18, 2017 following the historic Operation Restore Legacy which saw Major General Philip Valerio Sibanda ascend to Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
Prior to his appointment as ZNA Commander, General Chimonyo served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Burundi, Tanzania and Rwanda.
Funeral arrangement will be announced in due course, though he is a candidate for the coveted national hero status.
