The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) will soon begin rolling out prepaid water meters in small towns, growth points and rural service centres.

This follows successful pilot projects in Chivhu and Mvurwi.

In a recent statement, ZINWA said they are expediting installation of prepaid water meters across the country with a target of 35 000 meters by year end to curb the ballooning water debts which stand at over $2 billion.

ZINWA are confident that this exercise will allow clients to have control over their water consumption, while offering them an opportunity to pay before water consumption.

“Zinwa is rolling out prepaid water meters in small towns, growth points and rural service centres where it provides service. This will allow clients greater convenience and control of their water use. Clients will now be able to pay only for what they use,” ZINWA explained.

Experience from use has shown that the meter have been helping some challenges existent between ZINWA and ratepayers.

Last year Engineer Bongile Ndiweni who chairs the ZINWA board said the authority was looking for innovative ways and interventions to collect revenue.

The deliberate drive by ZINWA is to rehabilitate existing water supplies is in line with the Government’s broader aspirations of improving water availability to citizens under the National Development Strategy 1.

For there to be reliable water, revenue leakages have to be addressed.
