In a post-Cabinet address in Harare yesterday, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Janfan Muswere, highlighted the government’s assessment of the state of the local industry, as presented by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Honourable Mangaliso Ndlovu.
“The report presented to Cabinet showcases the encouraging performance of Zimbabwe’s manufacturing sector under the Second Republic,” said Dr. Muswere. “The sector has made significant contributions to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with improvements in capacity utilization, employment, exports, and investments.”
The minister noted that the manufacturing sector remains highly diversified, consisting of 94 sub-sectors that produce over 7,000 products. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the growth and development of the local industry.
“To foster further growth opportunities, the government is supporting import substitution, targeting local production, and encouraging investments in the manufacturing sector,” Dr. Muswere explained.
The report also highlighted the challenges faced by the manufacturing sector and proposed policy interventions to address them. One of the key interventions includes a program to identify and utilize unutilized factory shells and other industry infrastructure.
“In line with our devolution thrust and the focus on rural industrialization, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is working with other government agencies and local authorities to promote value addition and beneficiation of industries in provinces and districts with abundant resources,” the minister added.
Dr. Muswere stressed that the local industrial sector remains a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economic development, and the government is committed to providing the necessary support to ensure its continued growth and prosperity.
