Harare – His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, and Chancellor of all State Universities, presided over the highly anticipated Presidential Innovation Fair 2024 Awards Ceremony at the Rainbow Towers HICC. Held under the theme “Innovation for Attainment of Vision 2030,” the event showcased the nation’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and impactful innovation ecosystem.
The event served as a testament to the power of #Education5.0, highlighting its role in nurturing a new generation of problem-solvers and changemakers.
The 2024 Presidential Innovation Fair aimed to build and reinforce a thriving innovation ecosystem through exhibitions and expos showcasing current work from universities, innovation and technology development institutions, government and private organizations, as well as individuals locally and in the Zimbabwean diaspora.
Addressing the attendees, President Mnangagwa emphasized the critical role of science, technology, and innovation in achieving Zimbabwe’s ambitious Vision 2030 goals. He commended the growing link between the skills being honed in educational institutions and the needs of Zimbabwean industries.
The President acknowledged the tangible progress made in recent years, noting the impressive innovations emerging from Zimbabwe’s youth. He praised the establishment of innovation hubs and other vital infrastructure, highlighting their invaluable contribution to nurturing creativity and entrepreneurship.
“It is not enough for us to talk about abundant minerals without having tangible products or services,” the President said. “Two years ago, I observed that many innovations were coming from the youth, and this Innovation Fair helps us take stock of what we are achieving. Real industries must now be out there. Market penetration and availability of goods should speak for themselves. Zimbabweans are willing to consume locally made products.”
He continued, “As we march towards Vision 2030, we must emphasize science, technology, and innovation. I congratulate the youth for your collective dedication and hard work. You have transformed the quality of students being churned out by our institutions.”
President Mnangagwa expressed his satisfaction that the produced goods and services were meeting the needs of the Zimbabwean people and that physical facilities such as innovation hubs have proved invaluable. He assured the innovators that the government would continue to provide a favorable environment for startups, including support in terms of capital and market access.
“Those taking awards home today, well done,” the President said. “And those who don’t must know that their efforts are appreciated, continue to build up.”
In closing, President Mnangagwa commended the Ministry for organizing the successful and well-attended event. The event was attended by government officials, representatives from the innovation ecosystem, and members of the public.
