President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for all Zimbabweans to emulate the late Major General (Rtd) Godfrey Chanakira in defending the nation and boosting its economy.
He said this while addressing mourners at the National Heroes Acre today.
” As we lay the late national hero Major General (Rtd) Chanakira at this sacred shrine, let us recommit ourselves as a nation to the defence and preservation of our revolution, freedom and democracy. The flames of unity, peace, non-violence, love and peace must continue to be at the centre of our interactions at every level and across communities,” said President Mnangagwa.
He said that the exemplary service rendered by the late national hero and other selfless heroes of the liberation struggle must be the benchmark as Zimbabwe moves towards self-sufficiency.
“Let us shoulder the responsibility to develop, mechanize and modernise our county.
The development philosophy of ‘Nyika inovakwa navene vayo’ is instructive and must embolden us never to tire in building our roads, dams, schools and other infrastructure as well as producing and manufacturing our clothes and what we use,” he added.
He saluted the late national hero as an astute academic and industrious patriot who also served as a Lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Defense College.
“In recognition of his perseverance and gallant exemplary service, the late Major General (Rtd) Chanakira was awarded Liberation Medal, Independence Medal, Long and Exemplary Service Medal, Mozambican Campaign Medal, Democratic Republic of Congo Campaign Medal and Grand Officer of Zimbabwe Order Merit.”
President Mnangagwa said that because of the efforts of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle like the late Major General (Rtd) Chanakira, the Second Republic shall continue to acknowledge them.
“The nation acknowledges the sacrifices and no amount of compensation to the gallant men and women will ever equal their contribution to our beloved country.
Therefore in honour of their selfless service, the Second Republic will continue to improve the welfare of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle,” said President Mnangagwa.
