President and Chancellor of all State Universities, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over Zimbabwe Open University’s (ZOU) 22nd Graduation Ceremony at its Hatcliffe Main Campus in Harare today, also marking the institution’s Silver Jubilee anniversary. The ceremony, themed “Celebrating 25 Years of Unlocking Human Capital Potential Through Open & Distance e-Learning,” saw 3,320 students receiving their academic qualifications.
The graduating class comprised 94 Diplomas, 2,524 Undergraduate Degrees, 327 Postgraduate Diplomas, 361 Masters’ Degrees, and 14 Doctoral Degrees. Notably, 65% of the graduates were female, highlighting the university’s role in advancing gender equality in higher education.
Among the outstanding graduates was 78-year-old Andreas Zvaiwa, who earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Counselling. His research focused on marriage counseling methods in Zimbabwe’s Bikita District. The ceremony also recognized Fernando Ferreira Alves from Mozambique, who received his Ph.D. in Business Management for his study on marketing agents in the Chibuku value chain.
Tange Wendy achieved exceptional recognition, graduating with First Class Honours in Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development. She received multiple accolades, including the prestigious Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Chancellor’s Award of US$1,000 for being the overall best female student.
Over its 25-year history, ZOU has made significant contributions to Zimbabwe’s education sector, producing 53,170 graduates and providing free training courses to 59,443 community members across all provinces. The university has established a presence in all ten provinces of Zimbabwe through its campuses and district centers, demonstrating its commitment to accessible education nationwide.
