Harare, September 18, 2024 – In a post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, presented a report on Vice President Col. (Rtd) K.C.D. Mohadi’s attendance at the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF II) held in Bali, Indonesia from September 1-3, 2024.
The forum, held under the theme “Bandung Spirit for the Africa Agenda 2063”, focused on seven key pillars: Outlook of the Region and Prospect of Cooperation; Economic Transformation; Mining Cooperation; Energy; Health; Food Security; and Development Cooperation.
During his address to the Joint Session, Vice President Mohadi highlighted the need for African countries to develop their capacity to handle global pandemics. He also noted that Zimbabwe had already commenced discussions with Indonesia to strengthen cooperation in the health sector, particularly in the area of pharmaceuticals. The Vice President invited Indonesian and African investors to Zimbabwe to invest in value addition and sustainable extraction in the mining sector, given the country’s rich mineral deposits.
In a courtesy call with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the Vice President discussed several areas of mutual interest, including Indonesia’s desire to enter into a Preferential Trade Agreement and ratify the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Zimbabwe to boost trade and economic interaction between the two countries. Indonesia also expressed keen interest in signing a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Mining.
The highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the Field of Health between the Government of Zimbabwe and the Republic of Indonesia. The MoU focuses on improving secondary and tertiary health interventions, enhancing resilience in pandemic surveillance, and leveraging technology in health service delivery.
Minister Muswere emphasized the importance of these engagements in strengthening Zimbabwe’s diplomatic and economic ties with Indonesia, a key partner in the Global South. The Cabinet report underscores the government’s commitment to diversifying its international relations and exploring new avenues for mutually beneficial partnerships.
