Cabinet has approved the National Energy Efficiency Policy, that was presented by the Minister of Finance and Economic development, Hon Professor Mthuli Ncube, before Cabinet.
Speaking at the post cabinet briefing this Tuesday, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Hon. Jenfan Muswere noted that the goal of this policy is to institute energy efficiency programs.
“The overall goal of the National Energy Efficiency Policy is to institute energy efficiency programs in order to promote sustainable development, as the country transitions to an Upper Middle-income society in line with the objectives of Vision 2030,” said Minister Muswere.
Government will however come up with an Energy Efficiency Act and National Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan to advance Vision 2030 goals.
Energy Efficiency Act and Strategy will assist in the achievement of low carbon development modalities and climate-resilient energy efficient systems.
Meanwhile, mandatory energy efficiency audit conducted by approved and certified energy auditors shall be prescribed.
“The Government shall mandate intensive energy users, and encourage other industrial users to be certified by a recognized energy management standard such as the Management Systems (ZWS ISO50001) amongst others,” Hon Muswere reiterated.
