The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has released new candidate registration fees, which are expected to limit interest of key positions in society to serious people.
In the new fees gazetted by ZEC, through Statutory Instrument 144 of 2022, a Presidential candidate will have to pay US$20 000.
Those seeking to become parliamentarians and senators will pay US$200, while aspiring councilors have to part with US$100.
Observers say the move is set to separate the chaff from the wheat, as the amounts are predicted to send one into introspection before getting their name on the ballot paper.
The price adjustments, have also extended to the voters` roll.
“The new cost of an electronic copy of a map in the polling area will be US$20, in the ward it will cost US$25, while for the constituency will be US$30.
For the provincial and National it will be US$60 and US$150 respectively. The fees are payable in Zimbabwe local currency at the official market rate,” the notice read.
The last election, saw some figures like Nkosana Moyo and Noah Manyika throwing their names into the hat, for the Presidency, but never to be heard from again.
Such individuals increase when the fees are within reach of every other person, there is a great number of pretenders who emerge to muddy waters.
