ZANU PF Youth League confirms elective conference

ZANU PF Youth League is set to hold its 7th National Conference between 4 and 8 May 2022 at the revolutionary party Headquarters in Harare.
Proclaiming the Conference to the media in Harare yesterday, the Acting ZANU PF Secretary for Youth Affairs in the Politburo Cde Tendai Chirau said that it was a constitutional mandate of the Youth Wing to hold such a conference where new leadership of the Wing is elected.
“Members of the media are being informed that the 361st Ordinary Session of the Politburo has approved the holding of the National Youth Conference as stipulated in terms of Article 23, Section 196 of the Party Constitution. The Conference will be held from the 4th to the 8th of May 2022,” he said in a statement to the media.
The Politburo resolution has jolted the National Youth League Executive Committee into a marathon of preparatory meetings to ensure a successful hosting of this event which brings together all Provincial Executive Committees who form the electoral college that will be mandated with choosing the substantive National Leadership of the Wing.
“Furthermore, party structures are urged to come up with resolutions based on the six Thematic Committees below. There shall be six thematic committees namely;
1. Youth participation in Party Affairs
2. State of the economy and Youth participation
3. Youth health issues
4. Liberation War Heritage
5. Sports, Arts and Recreation,” continued the statement.
Some of the conditions for eligibility for election into the National Executive Council are that one must be 35 years and below as at the 4th of May 2022.
One must be a registered voter who have served the party for not less than five years at district level or above. One must be a registered voter with a clean criminal record.
The current National Youth Executive Council is a result of the Presidential waiver which encouraged an extension of their term of office following the transition of 2017 which did not give sufficient opportunity for complete leadership renewal.
This was necessitated by the need for structural continuity and stability of the Party.
The last selective Conference was held in 2014 and was due for renewal in 2019, but it was not possible as all efforts were focused on stabilising the party especially after the bruising 2018 harmonised elections.
The Conference is expected to result in the election of vibrant leadership of the Youth Wing which will be instrumental in the recruitment exercise towards the watershed 2023 elections.
The Youth Wing, which is often regarded as the Vanguard of the party, goes into this conference emboldened by the recent party successes in the just-ended by-elections which saw the party claw back into the race with an encouraging win in two National Assembly urban seats which were hitherto held by the opposition.
This will be a source of hope and celebration.
Notable figures who will not stand for election at the Conference include the current Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs in the Politburo Tendai Chirau, Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs Mabutho Moyo, Secretary for Indigenisation Tonderai Bosha, Secretary for production Christine Taruona, Secretary for Security Silas Chimbiro, Secretary for Finance Getrude Mutandi, Secretary for Information Yeukai Simbanegavi to mention but a few.
The Youth League is also expected to fill the post of Youth League National Political Commissar, a post which has remained vacant since the unceremonial departure of Godfrey Tsenengamu in February 2020 on allegations of gross insubordination.
