This afternoon, President and First Secretary of the ruling ZANU-PF party, Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, presided over an Extra-Ordinary Session of the Politburo at the party headquarters in Harare.
The session was convened specifically to deliberate on the recommendation for hero status for the late Cde Jason William Chezhira Chirinda, who passed away on October 27, 2024.
The recommendation for Cde Chirinda’s national hero status was initially put forward by the Mashonaland Central Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC), recognizing his enduring contributions to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
Following the session, ZANU-PF Secretary for Information, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, provided an official statement, noting that, “the Politburo unanimously granted the late Cde Chirinda this prestigious honor.”
Ambassador Mutsvangwa added that ZANU-PF National Chairman, Cde O.C.Z Muchinguri would personally visit the Chirinda family in Madziva to convey the Politburo’s decision.
Mashonaland Central PCC profiled the late Cde Chirinda’s life, noting he was among the early military figures in Zimbabwe’s liberation movement, a legacy that earned him a revered place in the nation’s history. Further it was revealed that his commitment to the cause included a lengthy imprisonment, from which he was only released after Independence.
Cde Chirinda’s burial is scheduled for November 4, 2024.
