Zanu PF has bagged five council seats ahead of the third of February by-elections following the removal of candidates who had registered under the Citizen for Coalition Change led by Nelson Chamisa, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has said.
Their removal follows a ruling by the High Court to have their names removed from the ballot paper following an appeal by CCC Interim Secretary General, Sengezo Tshabangu, who was challenging their registration as candidates. Mr Tshabangu argued that they could not represent CCC following their recall and had ceased to be members of the party.
In a notice, ZEC, through its Chief Executive Officer, Utoile Silai-Gwaan said, “The public is hereby informed that following a High Court Order issued on the 19th of January 2024 under Case No. HCH197/24, the nomination of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party candidates specified in Schedule 1 below who had been nominated for election in by-elections scheduled for the 3rd of February 2024 has been set aside.”
The candidates whose names have been removed are, Musingashari Musingashari, Chikonye Roger both of Chiredzi RDC, Gwenzi Samuel and Makone Ian Muteto of Harare and Haparari Innocent Kuziva of Manyame RDC.
Mr Silai-Gwaan continued, “Consequently, the public is hereby notified, in terms of section 125 (4) (a) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], that since only one candidate has been duly nominated for each of the specified vacant wards, the persons specified in Schedule 2 below have been duly elected as members of the local authorities with effect from the 3rd of February 2024.”
Cde Costen Mombe and Cde Brighton Nyashadzashe Mahiya therefore are elected as councillors for Chiredzi RDC under ZANU PF. Cde Abdurrahman Sapa and Cde Rufaro Daniel Matsika become councillors under Harare City Council. In Manyame RDC Ward 7, Cde Simbabrashe Ngarande gets a second dance as councillor.
