Government encourages participation of women in all sporting disciplines and areas of recreation without prejudice, a senior senior official has said.
Speaking at the International Women’s day celebrations in Harare, yesterday, Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation Machakaire said there should be continued calls for equal opportunities for men and women in society.
“The provision of equal opportunity to participate and be involved in sport whether for the purpose of leisure and recreation, health promotion or high performance is the right to every woman regardless of race, language, religion, age, marital status, disability, political belief or social origin,” said Deputy Minister Machakaire.
This year’s International Women’s day theme was ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 pandemic #chooseto challenge.’
“It is therefore our encouragement as a ministry for women and girls in Zimbabwe to take up their interest and pursue them fully and unravel the various opportunities within for gainful living.’’
Deputy Minister Machakaire said International Women’s day is a day that offers an opportunity to reflect and celebrate the many positive changes that have happened to create equality.
He emphasized the need for necessary structural and social changes needed to make full equality of opportunity possible for the growth and development of youth, sport, arts, and recreation in this country.
“It is also encouraging to observe that this celebration has a multi -faceted approach that will not only enrich women but is also in line with terms of the Sports Arts and Recreation which are aimed at promoting active lifestyle and encourage formation of community clubs,” he continued.
Minister Machakaire encouraged all women to adorn themselves with integrity, empathy, humility, and have the capacity to surround themselves with good people that add edification and growth in their lives.
At the same event, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Dr Thokozile Chitepo saluted women who have made strides in sports.
She gave specific mention to Tanya Mudzinda, Regina Jonga and Magret Bangajena.
