Dancehall star Winky D, yesterday won an international award at the 39th International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA).
Winky D was up against African giants like Shatta Wale from Ghana, Stonebwoy from Ghana, Patoranking from Nigeria and Zimbabwe`s Buffalo Souljah who is based in South Africa.

The musician who has come of age appears to be breaking into the previously elusive continental market.
Winky D first talked about the nomination via his Twitter page when he asked his fans to vote saying; “Greetings ma Gafa. The recognition by IRAWMA bears testimony to how much we are pushing the movement to global musical breadths and lengths. Let’s complete by voting for the Gafa and open up notable paths for our movement.”

His fans heeded the call, as it was then announced today that Winky D had scooped the award.

He posted on his twitter page celebrating the big win and thanking the support of his fans saying, “Love and respect to those who believed in my music from day one when I started preaching the ordeal of ghetto youths and when it was unentertaining to talk reality. This goes out to all who have supported me through coming for shows, the Vigilance band and every Gafa around the globe. Thank you.”

The IRAWMA are the Grammy equivalent in Reggae and Winky D` victory is by no means an easy feat.

Earlier this year he was nominated for MTV Africa Music Awards in the Listeners’ Choice Category and now he just won the Best African Dancehall Entertainer Award.
