Windfall for ZANU PF, MDC-T

Pretty Manyewe

Finance Secretaries at ZANU PF and MDC-T have a reason to smile as Government has confirmed the total funds these two parties will receive as Treasury complies with the Political Parties Finance Act (Chapter2:11).

The statute states that Treasury will provide for the financing of political parties by the State to prohibit foreign donations to political parties and candidates that qualify.

Parties are paid in proportion to the parliamentary seats they have, but for a party to qualify they need to have gotten at least five percent of the total seats in parliament.

Only ZANU PF and the MDC-T under Mr Douglas Mwonzora qualify.

Other fringe parties like the newly formed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) are watching from a distance, as they are a long way from achieving the demanding eligibility threshold.

The payout, comes as a factor in opposition politics where there are contestations between Nelson Chamisa, Thokozani Khupe and Douglas Mwonzora.

Mwonzora appears to be on the front foot with the financial injection which is likely to come in handy in his by-elections campaign and the 2023 election campaign.

His party gets 30 percent of the total amount.

The Government Gazette wrote, “The total amount of moneys payable to political parties in respect of the year beginning January 1, 2022, and ending December 31, 2022 is five hundred million Zimbabwean dollars,” the Government Gazette read.

ZANU PF will get ZWL$350 150 000, while MDC-T has an allocation of ZWL$149 850 000.
