Why ZACC Commissioner Makamure is under scrutiny

Zimbabwe Anticorruption Commission spokesperson Commissioner John Makamure is facing a number of criminal allegations which may result in his removal from office and has been put under investigation.
Some of the charges include corruption and possible conflict of interest.
President Mnangagwa yesterday swore jn a tribunal to look into whether Commissioner Makamure remains fit for office.
The tribunal is constituted according to section 237(3) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

Section 237(3) states that, “The procedure for the removal of a judge from office applies to the removal from office of a member of an Independent Commission and ought to be investigated. The President must appoint a tribunal to inquire into the matter.”
The Tribunal comprises of Retired Justice Maphios Cheda as Chairperson of the Tribunal, and two other members namely Mr Charles Warara and Ms Regai Thandiwe Hove.
The Secretary for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs is the secretary to the Tribunal.
According to the Statutory Instrument 172 of 2022, Proclamation 4 of 2022, the Tribunal will be held for five months from the date of swearing in of members at a venues determined by the Tribunal.
“The Tribunal shall investigate into the matter of the removal from office of Commissioner John Makamure of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, investigate whether or not Commissioner John Makamure failed to disclose his interest as the founder and trustee of the Southern African Parliamentary Support Trust (SAPST) whose objects are allegedly inconsistent with the functions of the ZACC and Government and investigate whether or not Commissioner John Makamure failed to disclose his involvement in political activities which is inconsistent with the duties and functions as Commissioner of ZACC.”

Makamure is also facing allegations of directing one Lee Sung to fund his
political campaigns in Gokwe in return for Lee Sung’s protection.
The Tribunal will consider all information submitted by the Judicial Service Commission in order to arrive at
an appropriate recommendation to the President, recommend on whether Makamure is fit to hold office in the light of the foregoing; and report to the President, in writing, the result
of the inquiry within a period of one month after completion of the inquiry.
