Washington moves to protect favourite pawn

The force behind Job Sikhala`s recent treasonous and violent utterances has unwittingly shown its hand, if recent developments into his case can be anything to go by.
Sikhala, who was arrested in the aftermath of political violence in Nyatsime on June 14 has roped in American lawyers to argue his case.
On three occasions, since his arrest, the state has successfully argued that Sikhala is a flight risk and may abscond trial.
According to sources, Sikhala`s handlers in Washington are becoming restive that their combative activist of choice is spending time behind bars.
For long opposition members have had an opaque relationship with America, a country behind the most difficult sanctions against Zimbabwe.
To try and rescue the situation Sikhala`s handlers have engaged Amsterdam and Partners, a law firm based in Washington, United States of America.
In a letter seen by Tateguru Tv, the firm`s Managing Partner Andrew Durkovich wrote to Sikhala promising him free legal assistance.
“This letter confirms that Job Sikhala (client) has engaged Amsterdam & Partners LLP, a district of Columbia Limited Liability Partnership (the firm), to provide legal and other professional services to the client,” the letter read.
“The firm is engaged to assist the client in connection with legal and political issues in Zimbabwe. This engagement shall commence as of the date of this letter and shall continue until such time as it is terminated by either party. The engagement is part of the firm’s pro bono program, and therefore no fees will be charged by the firm,” the letter further stated.
Opposition figures have been celebrating the new development on the internet.
However, legal experts say according to current laws there has to be approval by the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs before foreign lawyers are allowed to operate in Zimbabwe.
