Tertiary institutions of learning have been instructed to close between April 18-30, 2022 to allow for the smooth conduct of the national Population and Housing census.

The government directive was announced by the Acting Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, during a Post Cabinet briefing in Harare yesterday.

The National enumeration process will be carried out by the by the Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (Zimstat), is a critical national process which requires the participation of all citizens, in including learners and instructors.
The closure of institutions of higher learning will ensure the enumeration of students in their rightful residential areas.

Religious gatherings have also been suspended for the period of the national census to allow free access by enumerators into homes.

“To avoid collective or institutional households, Cabinet advises the nation that all institutions of higher learning will be closed from 18 to 30 April 2022. Closure of the institutions will pave way for the enumeration of students in their usual households,” said Acting Minister Jenfan Muswere.

He further noted that preparations for the 2022 population and housing census are still going on. Training of enumerators was completed in March 2022.

A population census collects data on the size, distribution and composition of population (demographics) and information on a broad range of social and economic characteristics of the population. It also provides sampling frames for household and other surveys.
It informs such activities as the delimitation process.

Preliminary Census mapping results revealed that Zimbabwe’s population is expected to hit the 17 million mark from 15.1 million from the previous count.
The last head count was conducted in 2012.
