Movement for Democratic Change-Alliance (MDC-A) member and activist Makomborero Haruzivishe was today sentenced to 14 months in prison by Harare Magistrate Judith Taruvinga.
Magistrate Taruvinga slapped the former Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) Secretary-General Haruzivishe 24 months on the first count of incitement, and 12 months for resisting arrest.
Ten of the 24 months and six of the 12 months were suspended. With the two sentences running concurrently, Haruzivishe will serve 14 months in prison.
Prosecutor Mr Moses Mapanga said Haruzivishe’s moral blameworthiness was very high as there was high potential of loss of lives and damage to property.
Makomborero Haruzivishe pleaded guilty hence not wasting the court’s time.
This judgement was anti-climactic for Haruzivishe’s supporters who had gathered outside the court ahead of the trial in anticipation of a walk over trial in his favour.
Online activists had mobilized each other the previous day via social media warning Government to brace itself for the wrath of the ‘People Power’ movement if they did not rule the case in Haruzivishe’s favour.
“Tomorrow the regime has to free @MakomboreroH or face something it has never faced or imagined facing before. The choice is the regime’s!!!,”read a tweet by self roclaimed ‘Tajamuka Leader’, Promise Mukwananzi.
The streets of Harare were however peaceful only making the threats by Haruzivishe’s fellow activists on government the bluff of the week.
On social media they sang from the book of lamentations
MDC-A leader Nelson Chamisa is reported not to have attended the Haruzivishe`s trial while MDC-A Spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere is also said not to have made it inside either.
Social Media cyber-terrorist group, Team Pachedu has posted the name, phone number and address of the constable that arrested Haruzivishe, further inciting bitter MDC-A supporters to attack the police officer and cause harm to him and his family.
