Sugar producers assure market of adequate supply

Sugar producers have refuted social media claims that they are struggling to produce and the country could face a shortage of the critical commodity.

The Zimbabwe Sugar Association (ZSA) Chairman Muchadeyi Masunda said it is untrue that Tongaat Hullet, the largest sugar producer in the country has suspended operations and there are looming shortages.

“We wish to advise all our valued stakeholders that these reports are unfounded and incorrect. There is adequate stocks of all types of sugar within the country following the resumption of the milling season in April 2022,” Masunda said.

He said the new policy approaches announced by Government and market changes have not affected operations at sugar farms.

“The sugar industry has been operating smoothly without any interruptions and does not expect any disturbances to sugarcane farming, production or the distribution logistics which are currently in place,” Mr Masunda said.

He urged consumers to ignore suggestions of shortages as they do not reflect the position of sugar producers.
