Harare – In a move set to revolutionize internet connectivity in Zimbabwe, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has awarded two licenses to Starlink Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd. The licenses, issued on September 6th, 2024, authorize Starlink to provide internet services nationwide using their Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation.
Starlink’s entry into the Zimbabwean market is expected to significantly enhance internet penetration and affordability, particularly in underserved and remote areas. The company plans to collaborate with existing Network Operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to ensure widespread distribution of user terminals and managed end-user services.
To ensure regulatory compliance, POTRAZ has mandated that all agencies, dealers, and ISPs involved in the distribution and sale of Starlink user terminals must obtain clearance from the authority. This requirement applies to both existing and prospective entities. The sale or distribution of Starlink user terminals without proper licensing and clearance has been declared a punishable offense.
Dr. G.K. Machengete, Director General of POTRAZ, expressed optimism about the positive impact of Starlink’s technology on Zimbabwe’s digital landscape. He emphasized that connecting the unconnected and bridging the digital divide remain key priorities for the nation’s journey towards its 2030 vision.
The introduction of Starlink’s LEO technology is expected to complement Zimbabwe’s existing network infrastructure and contribute to the development of a robust and inclusive digital ecosystem.
