President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday paid his condolences to the Moyo family following the death of ZANU PF Spokesperson Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo.
Speaking at the Moyo residence in Bulawayo last night, the President said he has been close friends with Ambassador Moyo for a very long time since the days of the liberation struggle.
“I have come because Cde S.K Moyo has been my friend for ages. I got a call from Cde Chiwenga informing me of the death of Cde S. K Moyo on my way to South Africa for an Inter Africa Trade Fair,” said President Mnangagwa.
He had to cut short his trip to the Inter Africa Trade Fair.
“I came back and left everything to come and be with you. I am very grateful to the Moyo family for accepting my request,” said President Mnangagwa.
President Mnangagwa narrated how he had worked side by side with the late national hero as they both assisted and advised the two iconic liberation war leaders Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe.
“In 1979 we used to meet during those years and we started staying together during Lancaster House Conference. We had Julius Nyerere, Kenneth Kaunda, Samora Machel, Cdes Joshua Nkomo and R.G Mugabe. They all had their advisors, with Cde Simon Khaya Moyo as assistant to Cde Nkomo, while I was Special Advisor to Cde Mugabe,” said President Mnangagwa.
The President went on to explain to the nation that there was no bad blood between him and the late Moyo despite Cde Moyo having read the letter that sent President Mnangagwa into exile in November 2017.
The President emphasised that indeed Cde Moyo’s Hero status was unquestionable given his contribution in the pre-post independent Zimbabwe.
He urged the nation to remain united and share the burden even in the face of devastating grief.
Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo passed away on November 14, 2021, after a protracted battle with cancer.
He will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre on Monday, November 22, 2021.
The President was accompanied by Vice President (Rtd) General Constantino Chiwenga and Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister and ZANU PF National Chairman Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri.
