The resort City of Victoria Falls is in shock following the drowning of a 23 year old man from Mkhosana township on Wednesday last week.

Mr Nkosikhona Fanana Nyoni went missing on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 when he left home without notice.

On Saturday, a community search party assembled by Ward 11 Councillor Goshen Zhou joined the police in search of the missing well-known resident.

The search effort led to a discovery of his clothes, mask and mobile phone by Masuwe riverbank, directing the search focus into the river.

The search party didn’t rest until the discovery today of his lifeless body floating in the water bottom of the river banks.

It is still a mystery how his body, if he died on Wednesday, could still be floating above the stagnant waters of Masuwe river pool.

Family spokesperson, Philani Nyoni pleased for donations towards funeral expenses as the wake is expected to take longer than expected due to a mandatory pathological procedure when the exact cause of death is unknown.

“We are kindly asking for contributions for the funeral of Nkosikhona Fanana Nyoni who drowned at Masuwe river. They is a post-mortem which is being conducted . We kindly asking for donations in terms of eco-cash or cash equivalent $1 or any amount”.

The Ecocash number 0774018635 is registered in the name of one PHILANI NYONI.

Meanwhile, as the Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken the body for post-mortem, Councillor Goshen Zhou is assisting with resource mobilisation to help the family cover funeral expenses.

“Afternoon residents of Victoria Falls. We have opened this group to mobilise contributions that will assist the Nyoni family who lost their dear son.

Let’s continue sending the little you have as it will take more days while the family members are gathered before the burial of their son.

Together we can go far. Let’s keep on assisting the family,” said Councillor Zhou in a group WhatsApp message.

Councillor Zhou could not however be drawn into commenting on the matter as he preferred to let police investigations unravel the details before passing any speculative comments.

National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not be reached for comment.

Conspiracies are already flying around in the resort city, as some residents are suspecting foul play while others are bringing into the matrix the long-held traditional mystery about mermaids.

The family is pinning hopes on a post-mortem to understand the cause of death.

Residents of Victoria Falls city are famed as a small closely-knit family, which always have a way of getting together to assist one another in times of trouble.
