More than seven people are feared dead, and several others were injured after a commuter omnibus encroached into the lane of a fuel tanker, resulting in a head-on collision along the Harare-Bulawayo Road in Kuwadzana.

Disturbing images of the fatal aftermath have been circulating on social media, showing victims lying lifeless at the scene.

The driver of the commuter omnibus reportedly turned right into the Harare-Bulawayo Highway without checking for traffic.

The seven victims are yet to be named as they have not yet been identified by their next of kin, Commissioner Nyathi said.

An earlier statement by national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said five people died on the spot.

But in an update on the police X (formerly Twitter) handle, the police said “the death toll has risen to seven”.

In the previous statement, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 31st October 2024 at around 5.10 am along Harare-Bulawayo Road, Kuwadzana 7 turn off at the traffic-controlled intersection of First Street and Bulawayo Road, Harare.

“Five people were killed while six others were injured when a Toyota Hiace kombi with yet to be established number of passengers on board collided with a fuel tanker with no passengers on board. The kombi had turned right into Bulawayo Road in front of the oncoming fuel tanker.”

Comm Nyathi said the victims had not yet been identified by their next of kin. He also confirmed the death of two other people in a road accident that occurred along Harare-Masvingo Road.

“Meanwhile, two people were killed while five others were injured when a Toyota Land Cruiser veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels at the 225-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road on October 30, 2024, at around 3.30 pm,” he said.
