SADC Summit this week

Presidents from SADC member states will this week congregate in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo where they are expected to deliberate on key issues affecting regional trade, peace and stability.

The Summit will be held under the theme “Promoting industrialisation through, agro-processing, mineral beneficiation, and regional value chains for inclusive and resilient economic growth”.

The theme for 2022 Summit is an endeavour to strengthen implementation of the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030, which seeks to further deepen Southern Africa regional integration and foster development in support to the pillar for Industrial Development and Market Integration.
According to Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Ambassador Fredrick Shava, the Summit, which will be held on August 17 and 18, is expected to provide a platform to discuss issues surrounding regional integration and industrialisation.
“It provides impetus to the implementation of the SADC Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap that will help SADC economies to diversify from over-reliance on primary commodities, such as raw minerals and agricultural products into high-value manufactured products.
“Industrialisation is a key component of the development of our countries and the region and indeed it dovetails with Zimbabwe’s own Vision 2030,” said Ambassador Shava.
Discussions are at the Summit are expected to look at the implementation of SADC history in educational curricula, reviewing progress in the implementation of various activities in addition to health issues with regards to HIV and AIDS as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.
Also, the Summit will review of progress on Regional Integration in line with SADC’s aspirations as outlined in the RISDP 2020-2030 and Vision 2050, which envisage a peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle-to high-income industrialised Region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being, justice, and freedom
