SADC Executive Secretary Meets Chairperson President Mnangagwa Ahead of Extraordinary Summit

The Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), H.E. Elias M. Magosi, paid a courtesy call on the SADC Chairperson, His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, at State House in Harare.

H.E. Magosi was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. Amon Murwira.

During the meeting, H.E. Magosi briefed the SADC Chairperson on matters of regional integration, including the upcoming Extraordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled to take place on 20 November 2024 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, H.E. Magosi highlighted the progress in preparations for the Summit.

“All these meetings, they build up to the main Summit. The Troika is the one that prepares the agenda of the peace and security. The preparations are going on very well,” he stated.

In addition, Hon. Murwira commended the Secretariat for its work, noting Government’s intention to host a successful summit.
“We are very pleased working with the secretariat, all is in order, and we are looking forward to the successful hosting of the summit,” Professor Murwira said.

The Extraordinary SADC Summit will focus on reviewing the regional security situation, with particular emphasis on the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Summit will receive updates on the progress of the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), which was deployed on 15th December 2023 to address insecurity, restore peace, and create conditions for sustainable development.

President Mnangagwa, in his capacity as the SADC Chairperson, will preside over the Summit, which will be held at the New Parliament Building in Mt. Hampden.

Ahead of the Summit, ministerial meetings and sessions of the SADC Senior Officials, the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, as well as the SADC Council of Ministers, are already underway.

These meetings aim to finalize the agenda and ensure a smooth progression toward the Summit.

Additionally, the Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika, chaired by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania and Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, will precede the main Summit.
