President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially took over the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) today, succeeding Angola’s President Joao Lourenço, who led the bloc over the past year.
President Mnangagwa’s assumption of this role was marked by the conclusion of the 44th SADC Summit.
Timothy Mncube, President of the Zimbabwe African National Congress (ZANC), congratulated Mnangagwa on his new position, praising his leadership and dedication to the region. Mncube described the chairmanship as a well-earned acknowledgment of President Mnangagwa’s vision and commitment to SADC’s goals.
In his closing remarks at the summit, President Mnangagwa stressed the significance of unity and resilience among SADC member states. He thanked the region’s leaders for their steadfast support of Zimbabwe in the face of prolonged Western sanctions. He highlighted the unbreakable ties within SADC, which have withstood various external pressures.
He also called for innovative approaches to bolster regional economic integration, particularly by adding value to the region’s abundant mineral resources. President Mnangagwa reaffirmed SADC’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and pursue economic self-reliance.
The summit concluded with a collective commitment to advancing regional development projects and promoting industrialization, aligned with the summit’s theme, “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustainable Economic Growth and Development towards an Industrialized SADC.”
In his final address, President Mnangagwa expressed his deep appreciation to the attending leaders for their participation, extending a warm invitation to enjoy Zimbabwe’s hospitality. He then officially declared the summit closed, marking the end of the event.
The summit, ran under the theme “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustainable Economic Growth and Development towards an Industrialized SADC,” concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing regional projects and industrialization efforts.
His Excellency President Mnangagwa extended his sincere thanks to the visiting leaders and officially declared the summit closed, inviting all attendees to enjoy Zimbabwe’s renowned hospitality.
