The Ministry of Health and Child Care has ordered the removal of purity baby powder from shop shelves.

This follows an announcement by Tiger Brands of South Africa that there are some batches of the product which have high levels of asbestos which causes cancer called mesothelioma.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Air Commodore Jasper Chimedza directed that all batches of Tiger Brand’s Purity Essentials Baby Powder or Purity & Elizabeth Anne’s Essential Baby Powder be recalled and removed from sale.

Government has also barred importation of the baby powders.

Part of the directive issued by Zimbabwe’s Secretary for Health and Child Care, Air Commodore Jasper Chimedza, reads,

“RECALL OF PURITY ESSENTIALS-BABY POWDER FROM SOUTH AFRICAN SHOPS FOR HEALTH REASONS

The above matter refers.

Tiger Brands of South Africa is recalling the Purity Essential Baby Powder from shops. The products contain unacceptable levels of asbestos, which causes rare cancer called mesothelioma.”

“The traces were recently detected in test samples prompting the recall of the product. The following packages are recalled:

Product Description | Weight | Barcode

Purity Essentials Baby Powder/ Purity & Elizabeth Anne’s Essentials Baby Powder | 100g | 6009523601859

He added, “Given that a significant number of products in our supermarkets are sourced from South Africa, there is a possibility that some batches of the baby powder in question are already in Zimbabwe. These products should be removed from the shelves or intercepted at points of entry.”

The public is being warned of this harmful product, to stop further distribution of the product within the country due to its negative health effects.

According to the UK’s National Health Service, Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops in the lining that covers the outer surface of some of the body’s organs.

It’s usually linked to asbestos exposure.

Mesothelioma mainly affects the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), although it can also affect the lining of the tummy (peritoneal mesothelioma), heart or testicles.
