Government has liberalised the transport sector, allowing private players to return after a two-year suspension in the interest of public health.
When Covid-19 was recorded in Zimbabwe in March 2020, Government left the mandate to transport urban commuters in the hands of ZUPCO.

Now that the country`s economy is now fully active, thanks to Government`s successful vaccination programe, the demand for transport could not sufficiently be met by ZUPCO.
President Mnangagwa as a listening President recently took heed of requests to relook into transport situation and yesterday he announced new measures to ease movement in rural areas.

Announcing measures to curb market indiscipline and exchange rate manipulation at State House yesterday, President Mnangagwa said the conditions surrounding the return of private players will be announced.

“Government is proceeding to open up the public transport system for other players in order to complement the services being provided by ZUPCO, in line with the reduction in Covid-19 cases and the subsequent opening up of the economy. To compliment the above measures, Government will allow for the duty free importation for a period of 12 months, for vehicles which meet regulations to be issued,” said President Mnangagwa.

President Mnangagwa however urged private players to adhere to regulations upon their return.
“The liberalisation of the public transport system shall be done under terms and conditions to be published by Government. The Police would need to ensure that law and order is adhered to as the behaviour on our roads needs to be seriously attended to. Non adherence to the rules and regulations to be gazetted would not be tolerated,” said President Mnangagwa.
