President Mnangagwa has commiserated with the families of ten farm workers who perished in a veld fire on October 11 in Esigodini, Matabeleland.
The deceased are said to have died while trying to put out the fire.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
President Mnangagwa has instructed Government to move in with assistance to the affected families, including meeting funeral expenses.
“The news of the Horrific death of ten workers in raging Veld fires at a farm in Esigodini in Matebeleland South Province came to me as a shock.
While investigations are still underway, it is quite clear that Veld fires against high winds have become a real threat to life and property,” said President Mnangagwa in a statement yesterday.
President Mnangagwa said that because of the rising numbers in Veld fires his Government will forge a strategy to minimise the growing menace which increases in risk until the first rains of the Summer Season come.
“Both the Ministry in charge of our Environment and our Civil Protection Department have to urgently get together so a comprehensive response to veld fires is developed,” he added.
He called on to Zimbabweans across the nation to desist from starting uncontrolled fires as the dry velds and winds would only cause break outs and pose a threat to lives as well as infrastructure.
“On behalf of the party ZANU-PF, Government, my family and on my own behalf I wish to express my deep, heartfelt condolences to the families which lost their beloved ones in this veld fire incident. In the same vein, I wish all those nursing burns from the fire speedy a recovery.
May the souls of the dear departed rest in eternal peace,” President Mnangagwa added.
