President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed pain over the double blow that the country has been dealth in the death of Mrs Janet Banana and Mrs Angela Haritatos.
Mrs Janet Mbuyazwe Banana, who was the widow of the former President Canaan Banana, died at the age of 83 after suffering from kidney failure.
President Mnangagwa released two commiseration statements to the two families.
In his message, the President Mnangagwa said, “The country remembers her with fond memories and admiration for the important roles she played during the period of our liberation struggle and as our First Lady. During the liberation struggle, she exhibited courage and bravery as she endured persistent harassment at the hands of the Rhodesians for supporting her late husband in his activism.”
Her funeral will be a state assisted funeral.
Mrs Angela Haritatos was the mother to the Honorable Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural settlement, Vangelis Haritatos.
She died of Covid-19 related complications after two weeks in intensive care.
The Deputy Minister also recently lost his father who succumbed to the COVID-19 virus.
“On behalf of the party ZANUPF, Government, my family and on my behalf, I wish to express my deepest condolences to the Haritatos family for the loss of their dear mother Angela. May they derive comfort from the knowledge that the nation shares their pain and sorrow during their darkest hour of grief and double tragedy,” said President Mnangagwa.
