President Mnangagwa has left for Niger to attend the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union on Industrialisation and Economic Diversification in Africa and the Special Session of the African Union on the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement.

The African Union Summit on Industrialization and Economic Diversification is a platform to highlight Africa’s determination and commitment to Industrialization as one of the central pillars in attaining the continent’s economic growth and development goals.

The Extraordinary Summit of the African Union on Industrialisation and Economic Diversification in Africa is being convened under the theme “Industrialising Africa: Renewed commitment towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization and Economic Diversification.”

The  African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA)  was adopted and opened for signature on 21 March 2018 in Kigali and came into force on May 30 2019. Zimbabwe signed the AfCFTA in March 2018 and subsequently ratified it on 25th April 2019.

The goal of AfCFTA is to; increase trade among African countries, stimulate production through the development of regional value chains, strengthen the capacities of African companies to access and supply world markets, strengthen Africa’s economic and commercial diplomacy.

Zimbabwe’s standing is most appropriate for intra-regional and Continental trade synergy as it is the gateway from South of Limpopo to the Central Africa.

The fruits from the AfCFTA are the stepping stones for Zimbabwe’s plans to maximise on the Beitbridge – Chirundu highway.

In the National Development Strategy phase 1 Government has made plans to create revenue through the traffic that moves from South Africa through Zimbabwe to Malawi, Zambia and Namibia.
