President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday once again displayed his faithfulness to the promise he made in 2018 to observe the day for national cleanliness.

The President yesterday joined the Bulawayo community for yet another clean up program, which came as the nation grapples with yet another Covid-19 scare of a new lethal variant Omicron.

“Notwithstanding the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, I am pleased to note that after three years, the National Clean-Up Days initiative is still receiving overwhelming support. I commend citizens, the private sector, civic organisations, religious organisations, as well as Ministries, Departments and Agencies among other stakeholders, for remaining resolute to the objectives of this programme,” said President Mnangagwa .

President Mnangagwa in 2018 declared the first Friday of every month as a national clean-up day as a way to encourage the culture of cleanliness from household levels to communities and the nation at large.

The President acknowledged the new national thrust towards sustainable waste management by embracing recycling as an environmentally friendly business model.

“The continued growth of recycling activities across the country is pleasing and presents an opportunity or drastically reduce most of the waste management challenges the country has been facing. This ensures a clean, safe, and healthy environment for present and future generations,” he said.

President Mnangagwa condemned the abuse of resources by local authorities which has seen councils failing execute their waste management responsibilities.

In the past local authorities have faced sharp criticism from the public for failing to provide essential services due to ratepayers.

“I, therefore, challenge all Local Authorities to now be the cornerstone of this programme by effectively carrying out their mandate as champions of waste management in the country. This will undoubtedly require setting up of sustainable waste management frameworks including development of Local Environmental Action Plan,” said President Mnangagwa.
