His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa today presided over the Zimbabwe National Elders Forum (ZNEF) today at the State House in Harare. At the same event, President Mnangagwa launched a reparations initiative on paper titled, “The Untold Story of Injustices, Trauma and Losses Experienced by Indigenous Zimbabweans during the Colonial Era (1890-1980): A Case for Reparations.”
ZNEF is composed of senior groups, intellectuals, scholars and individuals from diverse vocations.
President Mnangagwa expressed his gratitude towards the ZNEF for its contribution towards the national development and policy formulation and it’s aim towards the restoration of dignity in the nation of Zimbabwe.
“I am humbled by the Elders Forum collective will towards the restoration of dignity in the aftermath of the decades long subjugation of the indigenous native by the racist colonial regime,” said President Mnangagwa.
Inline with the government’s policy of inclusivity and dialogue the ZNEF seeks to support efforts to build a stable, prosperous and secure future for the nation of Zimbabwe.
The President added that the study produced by the Elders would go a long way in bringing healing to those affected.
“The proposed study, as I am reliably informed, will put forward recommendations that will explore options to assist in the long term healing of affected communities as
well as for rekindling and recreating good will between the Zimbabwean society at large and the former colonial power,” President Mnangagwa highlighted.
In addition, President Mnangagwa pledged full support towards the ZNEF initiative.
“I would therefore, like to assure my Government’s support in the endeavor and further call upon the Zimbabwean society here at home and beyond our borders to also extend a supporting hand to the Zimbabwe National Elders Forum.”
President Mnangagwa further called for the respective industries to support ZNEF, for the realisation of best results. “It is therefore, important for our key knowledge industries
and institutions to support this study by the Elders Forum so that we harvest as many enriching insights into the human experiences of colonialism and its aftermath.
Indeed, a whole-of-society-approach will only serve to give us the best results possible with the significance of this work reverberating for generations to come, ” President Mnangagwa added.
