Preparations for the 2022 Population and Housing Census are progressing according to plan with the countrywide Census mapping and Pilot census projects having been successfully completed.

Preparations are at an advanced stage with supervisors receiving training on how to conduct the census.

The Census mapping exercise which was completed on January 19, 2022 involved a total of 40 257 enumeration areas which have already been demarcated, while the Pilot census, on the other hand, was successfully undertaken between November 18-27, 2021.

In a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa assured the nation that the recruitment and training of census personnel is underway, with the 500 Level 1 trainees having commenced their training on February 22, 2022.

“Subsequent Level II training will comprise 7000 trainees and will run from March 8-18, 2022, while level III training will comprise 41 500 trainees, and will run from April 7-17, 2022. The actual enumeration will be conducted between April 21-30, 2022.

ZIMSTATS confirmed that they have selected people who are at a managerial level and senior civil servants as their Level 1 trainees so that they will be able to train lower levels.

Cabinet noted with satisfaction that the preparations are on track for the successful holding of the 2022 Population and Housing Census.

The 2022 Population and Housing census is an important exercise, especially at this juncture as the country heads for the harmonised elections in 2023. Results of the census will inform such important planning processes as the delimitation process to determine constituency boundaries.

Zimbabwe is a developing country with a growing population whose growth must be regularly accounted for.

The country last held the 10 year demographic census in the year 2012 whose results may have been overtaken by events.
