Mduduzi Mathuthu who edits pro-opposition online platform ZimLive today surrendered himself to the police, after being called for interviews in an ongoing investigation.
The Bulawayo based journalist was answering questions over a tweet he made bearing content that denigrated the person of the President.
He was released after signing a warned and cautioned statement.
On June 1, the Zimbabwe Republic Police wrote to Mathuthu through a letter to his lawyers Ncube Attorneys inviting him for interviews related to the case.
After a few days of grandstanding online, the journalist turned himself in today and was released a brief process at the Bulawayo Central.
As the warned and cautioned statement read, Mathuthu was informed that he is being charged with undermining the authority and insulting the President as defined in Section 33 (2) (b) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9.23.
“It is alleged that I posted a message and a photo depicting the President announcing a speech through my Twitter handle and the chat carried the following message,-
I understand Mnangagwa was in Glen Lorne drinking when he was called to read this, and Mthuli Ncube and John Mangudya only learnt of the bank lending suspension when they were shown the speech.
Work of some CIO Economics Department, thereby undermining the authority of the President,” read the Warned and Cautioned Statement.
Mathuthu was further advised that he is entitled to the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case is likely to be in court soon.
