Plastic license discs submitted to SADC for approval

Zimbabwe has submitted proposed plastic license designs to SADC for approval as plans to move away from metal discs reach advanced stages.

This was revealed by Engineer Theodius Chinyanga, Transport and Infrastructural Development Permanent Secretary, who said the process is to ensure that the country is compliant with international standards.

“The procurement of consumables such as the ribbon ink and foil required to produce the plastic licence disks is underway,” said Chinyanga.

“In compliance with the International Organization for Standardisation and International Electronical Commision (IEC) 18013 standards on drivers licences the ministry applied for the Issuer Identification Number which uniquely identifies CVR as the issuing authority in Zimbabwe,” added PS Chinyanga.

The plastic drivers’ licences, also known as plastic polymer licences, already exists and in use in several SADC countries including South Africa.

Engineer Chinyanga has assured the public that the printers will be procured once final approval is received from SADC so as to avoid compatibility issues.
