In a move aimed at promoting the use of biofuels, the Government of Zimbabwe has implemented new regulations that mandate the blending of anhydrous ethanol with unleaded petrol.

The Petroleum (Mandatory Blending of Anhydrous Ethanol with Unleaded Petrol) (Amendment) Regulations, 2024 (No. 6) were published in the Government Gazette on August 30, 2024. The regulations were made by the Minister of Energy and Power Development after consultation with the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority.

The key provisions of the new regulations are:

1. All unleaded petrol imported into Zimbabwe must now contain a mandatory blend of anhydrous ethanol.

2. The previous Petroleum (Mandatory Blending of Anhydrous Ethanol with Unleaded Petrol) Regulations, 2013 have been repealed and replaced by these new regulations.

3. The new regulations will come into effect 7 days from the date of publication in the Gazette.

This policy change is expected to boost the production and use of biofuels in Zimbabwe, reducing the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels. The government has assured that measures will be taken to ensure a smooth implementation of the new regulations.
