A teacher coming from a beer jaunt on Saturday evening rescued a newborn baby from a Blair toilet in Chinyika, Goromonzi.

The baby was found at around eight in the evening by Mr Archford Charakupa, a teacher at Chinyika Primary School, who was coming from Chinyika shopping centre where he was having drinks.

Charakupa says he heard persistent cries which prompted him to investigate the source and that is how he found the baby lying on the toilet floor wrapped with a blanket.

He called the school headmaster Mr Kosmas Mutema who accompanied him to Chinyika clinic where the baby was assessed by a nurse identified as Sister Chikwavaira.

Sister Chikwavaira said that the mother of the child is suspected to be an experienced mature woman judging from the way the baby’s umbilical cord was tied.

Sister Chikwavaira informed Charakupa and Mutema that the matter should be handled by the police.

After the police was informed, District Medical Officer for Goromonzi Dr Steve Karimu organised an ambulance and a nurse to collect the baby next day.

Preliminary assessments show that the baby is in good health.

The mother is yet to be located.
