Zimbabwe celebrated its 44th Heroes Day today, honoring the gallant fighters who sacrificed their lives to liberate the country from colonial rule.

In his address, President Emmerson Mnangagwa highlighted the resilience and achievements of the nation despite ongoing challenges, including illegal sanctions and climate-induced shocks.

“Even in the midst of neo-colonial machinations and illegal sanctions imposed on us, let us honour our heroes with a promise that their sacrifices will serve as our light and inspiration,” the President stated.

He detailed the progress made across key economic sectors such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and infrastructure development. Notably, the country recorded a record wheat harvest this season, and is preparing for a robust summer cropping season to restore food security.

The President also emphasized the government’s commitment to memorializing the liberation struggle through initiatives such as repatriating and reburying fallen veterans, establishing liberation heritage sites, and preserving historical records.

“The need to accurately record, document and preserve the story of the Liberation Struggle cannot be over-emphasised,” he said.

As part of the commemorations, the government conferred medals and honors to over 184,000 veterans, including war veterans, ex-political prisoners, war collaborators, and non-combatant cadres. The esteemed “Royal Order of Munhumutapa” was also awarded to deserving individuals.

President Mnangagwa reiterated the government’s unwavering support for the welfare and economic empowerment of veterans, widows, and war victims, promising to address their needs through various programs and awareness campaigns.

The celebrations were attended by senior government officials, diplomats, traditional leaders, and thousands of Zimbabweans, who came together to pay tribute to the nation’s liberation heroes and heroines. The President called on all citizens to emulate the patriots’ profound sense of patriotism and dedication in building a prosperous future for Zimbabwe.
