In efforts to address food security, the Government distributed 20 000 fingerlings to 14 wards of Mutasa North  District early this year, with the Presidential Fisheries Scheme paying off in the district.

In addition, schools that had fish ponds also benefited from the program.

In an interview, Mr Stanford Mapuka, the District Livestock Specialist said Mutasa ranked 1st position in Manicaland at Fish farming. He said a total of 578 farmers are already into fish farming and they were expecting the figure to increase to 600, as the stocking period of fingerlings was fast approaching.

Mr Mapuka said the summer season is the stocking season and farmers are preparing so that by mid-October they start stocking fingelings in their fishponds.Further, the farmers were grouping themselves in clusters of 20, placing them at an advantage of price bargaining when they sell as a group.

Fish farming projects are being embraced greatly in Mutasa North as farmers in that region cannot keep livestock like cattle and goats, as there is limited grazing land.
